Since a depressive episode can be the first sign of bipolar disorder, treating it solely with antidepressants might trigger manic or mixed episodes in susceptible individuals. While not an antidepressant itself, L-methylfolate boosts the effectiveness of existing antidepressants. Caution is advised for those with bipolar disorder history.
