Oral symptoms include extensive ulceration, a pale tongue, excessive salivation, foul breath, swollen and painful salivary glands, and grayish membrane-coated mouth ulcers. Throat involvement presents as raw soreness, ulcerated mucous membranes, raw spots (especially affecting vocalists), painful speech and hoarseness, and potentially necrotic palate and faucial tissue. Faucial redness and dysphagia are common, along with nosebleeds, and diphtheritic involvement of the nose and larynx. Gastrointestinal symptoms include bilious, bloody vomiting and nausea, hiccups, abdominal pain and tenderness. Rectal symptoms can include excruciating pain, anal redness, frequent hemorrhaging, tenesmus, and a foul, gangrenous-smelling discharge; black stools may be present. Urinary symptoms include amber, painful, scant, albuminous urine and nephritis, accompanied by weakness and chills; urinary suppression can occur. The skin may be clammy and cold. Dosage should strictly adhere to physician's instructions and can be used concurrently with conventional medications. No side effects are reported. A 30-minute interval should separate ingestion from food, drink, or other medication. Strong odors (camphor, garlic, onion, coffee, asafoetida) should be avoided near the mouth during administration. Medical supervision is essential.
