Characteristic symptoms include intense agitation, anger outbursts, and excessive speech. Facial pallor and sunken eyes are common. The mouth displays extensive ulceration, a pale tongue, profuse salivation, foul breath, and swollen, painful salivary glands. Ulcers are coated with a grayish film. Throat symptoms include rawness, ulceration, and localized redness, especially affecting those who frequently speak, resulting in hoarseness and painful vocalization. Severe cases may exhibit necrotic tissue damage in the soft palate and throat. Difficulty swallowing is prominent. Nosebleeds may occur, along with diphtheria affecting the larynx and nose. Gastrointestinal symptoms include nausea, bilious or bloody vomiting, hiccups, abdominal pain and tenderness. Rectal symptoms encompass intense pain, anal redness, frequent hemorrhaging, tenesmus, and foul-smelling, gangrenous discharge. Black stools may be present. Urinary symptoms involve amber, painful, albuminous, and scanty urine, alongside nephritis accompanied by weakness and chills; urine suppression may also occur.
