Derived from unexpanded Cina flower heads, santonin is a crystalline compound effective against intestinal parasites like roundworms and threadworms. Its applications extend to certain eye and urinary tract issues. Characteristic symptoms potentially alleviated include visual, auditory, and gustatory hallucinations; eye conditions such as color blindness and strabismus related to parasitic infestation (manifesting as dark circles under the eyes); urinary problems like kidney or bladder infections (indicated by discolored – greenish, reddish-purple – urine), painful urination, enuresis, and urinary urgency; headaches (occipital); nasal itching; halitosis; a deep red tongue; bruxism; nausea (ameliorated post-prandially); a sensation of choking; and muscle twitching.
