Occlude one nostril, administering the medication into the other via a forceful sniff to ensure deep penetration. Repeat for the opposite nostril. Concurrent calcium and vitamin D supplementation is recommended to optimize therapeutic efficacy. Commonly reported side effects include nasal discharge, epistaxis, backache, arthralgia, cephalalgia, and other nasal symptoms such as pruritus, irritation, and discomfort. Unopened Ostospray requires refrigeration (2°C–8°C); do not freeze. Opened Ostospray should be stored at room temperature (15°C–30°C).
Ostospray, containing the naturally occurring thyroid hormone calcitonin, helps maintain calcium balance. It reduces bone loss and damage in osteoporosis patients, and may even stimulate bone formation, increasing bone density in some cases.
Ostospray can lower blood calcium levels. Severe drops can cause numbness or tingling in the extremities or around the mouth. Blood calcium should be monitored; contact your doctor immediately if these symptoms occur.
