Frequently prescribed for individuals with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), it also minimizes clot risk post-knee or hip replacement surgery. This medication can be taken with or without food, consistently at the same time daily for optimal efficacy. Long-term use, sometimes lifelong, may be necessary; never discontinue or adjust dosage without consulting your physician, as this significantly increases stroke, heart attack, or thrombosis risk. Lifestyle modifications – including quitting smoking, healthy eating, regular exercise, and weight management if needed – further reduce clot risk. Increased bleeding (nosebleeds, bruising) is a common side effect; report any unusual symptoms promptly to your doctor.
